Friends Overseas.
From time to time surfers from all over the world visit our country for a lot of reasons, but rarely surfing is one of them. Nevertheless, they end up surfing our local breaks and it’s always interesting to know what they think of us and our waves.
Last summer a friend from New Zealand, Rob, visited Greece and we were pleased to show him around. Some of you might met him. Anyways, he sent me an e-mail and pics from his latest surf trip with a prologue that made me happy (for a change) being greek. Thanks bro and we’re looking forward to seeing you again! Here it is.. “Kia ora* Roth and the rest of the Greek storm riders, its Rob here, from New Zealand.
I loved my visit to Greece a couple of months back and was really surprised to see the level of stoke that you guys have for surfing. I instantly felt a connection with the optimism that you have for your sport and the way you cope with long periods of flat calm conditions, because at the moment, I live in Nelson - the flattest town in New Zealand!
Check out the pics from my roadie to my home brakes at the bottom of the south pacific, next stop Antarctica…
The pics are from a south swell that came in lined up from Antarctica to the sub Antarctic isles, a large blocking high pressure system over the south island meant calm glassy conditions. This randomly coincided with a trip down south to see my family, siiiiick! On arrival the whole coast was firing at 4-5ft, groomed razor edge lines and gentile wafting offshores. Burn the family and get to the beach at all costs! The rest was empty barrels shared with just my mates, followed by big feeds with the family, smiles that lasted all night and noodle arms.
It winter is here now and the large bay of my own town (Nelson), which usually looks like the Mediterranean on a summers day, can turn into surf city. So im glued to the long-range forecast maps looking for just the right Mid Tasman storm to drift over from Australia, will post some of the local juice when my hopes and dreams come true…”
